    因為X射線能夠穿透幾乎所有材料,並被所有材料吸收,所以X射線照片不是反射光能的影像,而是射線透射照片。就是說,被攝體是處於曝光光源 (X射線)和記錄乳劑之間。光能被集中成束射向需要紀錄的區域,但和依靠普通光線的攝影不同,通過被攝體的成像光線,並不立即聚焦形成清晰的影像。影像是由被攝體及其內部結構對X射線吸收程度不同,而造成的曝光差異。當器官、組織或其他結構和周周物質存 X射線下,具有同樣透明度時,往往需要使用硫酸鋇或各種碘溶液一類吸收X射線的物質,臨時充入或處理這些部位,以便在射線攝影時清晰可見。將局部器官遮蓋以獲取某一器官的清晰影像的技術叫做斷層X射線攝影,使用這種技術曝光時X光機和底片都需移動。用於醫療和牙科的射線照片是在盡可能弱的能量下,用所謂「柔和」的或長波X射線拍攝。底片被夾在螢光屏之間,只用最低的輻射量進行曝光。工業射線照片用的是「強烈」的、短波X射線,甚至使用r射線,它對有生命的被攝物不安全,及不加遮罩的底片。工業射線照片的曝光能量一般比醫用能量要高出數千甚至百萬千伏。從螢光檢查儀的螢幕上用普通攝影的方法,能拍得非直接X射線照片的影像。
